“That Slow Dance” was inspired by the very first slow dance of my life.
I was a shy guy, standing against the wall, unsure of where I fit. She was older, confident, already living a bigger life than I could imagine. When she pulled me onto the dance floor, it wasn’t about romance, it was about being seen for the first time.
That song, and that moment, stayed with me. Not because of how it sounded, but because of how it made me feel: safe, chosen, and capable of becoming more than I thought I was.
Written in the spirit of early ’90s country storytelling, “That Slow Dance” is my way of honoring the quiet power of that night and how one song, one act of kindness, and one slow dance can echo through a lifetime.
Lyrics
“That Slow Dance”
I was fifteen, back against the wall
Too scared to move, too young to fall
Music playin’, lights down low
Hopin’ nobody asked me
You crossed the room like you weren’t afraid
Said, “Come on, boy,” and pulled me away
I said, “I don’t dance,” you said, “We’ll see”
Smiled like you already believed in me
So I still ask myself now and then
What did you see that I couldn’t see in me
In that moment, holdin’ on
One slow song proved me wrong
Yeah, I was just a kid, barely standin’ free
What did you see that I couldn’t see in me
You’d been places I’d never known
Talkin’ ‘bout cities I’d never go
I was countin’ steps, missin’ time
Tryin’ not to lose my mind
Crowded room just slipped away
Just your hand and what you’d say
Didn’t feel small, didn’t feel out of place
For the first time, I felt okay
So I still ask myself now and then
What did you see that I couldn’t see in me
In that moment, holdin’ on
One slow song proved me wrong
Yeah, I was just a kid, barely standin’ free
What did you see that I couldn’t see
You probably never knew my name
Never knew you helped me change
Just a dance, just a song
But I carried that night all along
Yeah, I still ask myself now and then
What did you see that I couldn’t see in me
Life got hard, life moved fast
But I still feel that moment last
I was just a kid, barely standin’ free
What did you see that I couldn’t see in me
One slow dance
That was all it took
